ZURICH GUIDE: WHAT TO SEE & DO
The second stop on the trip was Zürich!!! Waking up that day we didn't realise we would almost miss the Flixbus. The bus stop was supposed to be outside the train station but..... it was a 10-minute walk. Running without suitcases we made it to the bus stop, all we had to do now is find our bus through 15 other buses!!! Looking at the signs it then seemed that we wouldn't make it Switzerland. Then I saw the bus pulling away, I ran to the guy and said we need to get on that bus! I was thinking there is no way that we are not getting on that bus when its right here!!! It paid off and we were on our way. The view outside the window was amazing, driving through German towns and past lakes. The last leg of the 3-hour trip took our bus onto a massive car carrier.
We stayed in an Airbnb apartment just a 5-minute walk to the main street and central station. While Münich was a beautiful city....Zürich took 1st place. Zürich has a river flowing through the city, cobblestone streets, trams, through the city the streets are flat where the Lake Zürich flows and get steeper the further you are away from the lake. I love the streets of Zürich and the views that are all around.
All over Europe, people put locks on bridges/fence and gates etc.. The locks are called love locks and once locked on the bridge the key is thrown away to symbolise an unbreakable love.
I don't have many photos of the food I ate in Zürich, but I did take one of the yummy food from an expensive overpriced restaurant. However, it did taste really yum!! Mozzarella and prosciutto with baby spinach and baby tomatoes !! The food is expensive in Zürich! We went to McDonald's and the burgers are twice the size and a lot better quality than in Australia. Switzerland is more expensive to live in than Germany, groceries and food prices are higher!
Catching a train up the side of a mountain through trees and away from the city, we then arrived at the Uetilberg Mountain. There are so many different trails with different distances to explore. Spending the morning hiking through the tracks and climbing the tower for the best view. It was amazing to see the city from above. I can only imagine how beautiful Zürich would like in the Winter, with snow everywhere.
Our afternoon on that day was spent walking around and exploring Zürich. Exploring new areas, we came across Grossmünster church and St. Peters church. GrossMünster church is the largest one and of course, I climbed to the top to see the city. There is something about climbing through old buildings and churches up hundreds of steps (that look like they will break!!), reaching the top and seeing the view that is all worth it.
While in Switzerland we went on a Rhine Falls tour from Zürich. We hopped on a bus for an hour and arrived at our destination. The Rhine Falls was really amazing, there are different viewpoints and even one that can get you right next to the waterfall and also soaking wet aha. Unfortunately, due to the falls being too rapid we couldn't go out on the water in a boat :(.
Cows and cowbells are a popular in Switzerland, everywhere you go in the gift shops there are cowbells and cow-themed souvenirs, I bought a mug that has a cow pattern on the outside and when you drink it shows a little 3D cow figure at the bottom. Cows and cheese making is a part of their culture. I think it is significant because of the movement of cattle in different seasons, moving down and up to high pastures.
My afternoon was spent bike riding around Lake Zürich, sitting by the lake and writing on my postcards to send home. Lake Zürich in the summer is filled with people out in the sunshine playing games, swimming, riding bikes and eating ice creams.
