BEER & PRETZELS IN MUNICH
Munich is the largest city in southern Germany and the capital of Bavaria, is famous for its annual beer festival, Oktoberfest. But there's a lot more to see and do! Munich is one of the most beautiful cities, filled with history and old churches. From the old town to the new buildings, it would have to be one of my favourite cities to visit. Munich was the first stop on my trip to Europe before i studied for 3 weeks at a university in Duisburg Essen, Germany. My time in Munich was spent exploring the city, seeing as much as I could in 3/4 days, eating pretzels and curry wurst.
Out of all the German cities I have seen, Munich is the best city to see German culture and history. When travelling to old cities one of my favourite things to do is climbing the stairs of old churches, reaching the top is always worth it when you see the view. In Munich there are two amazing viewpoints looking over Marienplatz (town centre) and the city. The first is from the Rathaus (town hall) and the second is from Peterskirche (St. Peters Church), this view was my favourite as you get the Rathaus and the Frauenkirche in one view.
Munich Residenz is the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria. The Residenz is the largest city palace in Germany and is open to the public. The palace has beautiful high ceilings and artworks and paintings throughout.
One of the best beer halls in Munich is the Hofbrau Haus, dating back to the 16th century! Walking into the beer hall there are long wooden tables with bench seats everywhere and massive pretzels being handed out by ladies dressed in the traditional dirndl's. The food was amazing! I had to have the first German schnitzel of the trip and it did not disappoint. Wiener Schnitzel with traditional potatoes salad and cranberry sauce. mmmm Best part about travelling to Germany is the food.
